Cheap Chargers, are they worth it?
Short answer, they are definitely not worth it!!!!On all iPhones and iPads they have a charging IC that also handles all USB communications. Up until the iPhone 7 plus this chis has been called the Tristar. On the iPhone 8 and above it has been re christened Hydra. This charging circuit is designed to communicate with the usb charger plugged into the dock connector. The MFI certified charging cords have a circuit board in their ends that is designed to communicate with the charging circuit in the phone, it also protects against voltage spikes. The cheaply manufactured cords sometimes do not have the circuitry designed properly it at all and this causes the charging IC, Tristar and Hydra to get electrically damaged causing the device to fail to charge the phone or power on at all.
Some common symptoms of a failed charging IC are:
- Slow charging
- Charges only to 6%
- Battery reports a false charge.
- Wont recognize charging cable
- Wont detect on itunes
- Wont charge battery from dead
- Device stuck in a apple logo boot loop
In the video below I demonstrate the diagnosis and repair of a failed Tristar chip on an iPhone SE.This was a challenging job due to the presence of hidden underfill under the chip.
Dangers of using copy screens on iPads.
So this ipad came in where the customer had tried replacing the digitizer on their ipad with a cheap knock off part from ebay resulting in the FPC connector on the board getting damaged. In the video below I demonstrate how I repaired the device.
The iPhone 7 Audio IC issue can it be fixed?
- The microphone works intermittently or not at all.
- The speaker phone is greyed out.
- Voice memos do not work.
- The phone takes a long time to boot fully and there is home button response while the phone is hung on the apple logo.
- The phone just shows the apple logo and boot loops

This repair is particularly challenging because of the underfilled baseband chip and cpu directly on the other side. In the video below I demonstrate how the repair is done.
Will bending the frame cause a wifi grey out on my iPhone?
The short answer is yes if you are lucky. In worse cases it can cause your phone to die completely. The reason this happens is because the motherboard in an iphone rests in the frame along it’s right side. So when the frame flexes and bends along its length it causes the motherboard to do so as well. The problem is further compounded due to large underfilled chips such as the CPU and the nand. They can sometimes quite literally tear the pads and traces that connect them to the board creating an open circuit that causes the chip to stop working. The image below shows the broken traces on the iphone 8 plus motherboard repaired using jumper wires.
The repairs on underfilled chips are quite difficult as the board has to first be preheated and then the chip has to be pried off because even then the underfill epoxy holds then chip onto the board pretty tight. The video below demonstrates how it’s done.
The infamous iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus touch disease
I would like to talk about the iPhone touch disease which afflicts the iPhone 6 plus and lately I’ve been seeing a lot of iphone 6 devices with this problem as well.
I will briefly explain how and why this happens. The iPhone 6 plus and 6 have a very soft aluminum frame that gets bent very easily and over time the touch IC develops cold solder joints under it and in some instances a trace also fractures especially on the iPhone 6 plus, thus to future proof the repair a jumper wire will have to be used to repair the broken trace. The video below demonstrates the repair
