The Problem

This iPad 7th Generation arrived at our lab completely dead and unresponsive. The device had seemingly stopped working out of nowhere, and previous attempts to revive it via a software update had failed. When a device fails in the middle of an update, the data is often trapped, requiring serious hardware intervention to force the device to boot fully so the files can be saved.

Our Diagnostic Process

Initial testing confirmed the iPad was stuck in a completely unresponsive state. It failed to complete a DFU restore via iTunes, throwing an error code indicative of a major hardware failure. Because the device showed no signs of standard short circuits on the primary power rails, our diagnosis pointed directly to a failure in the physical connection under the main processor. This is a known fault on this generation of iPads, where dropping or flexing the device breaks the microscopic solder joints under the CPU.

The Repair & Recovery

To get this iPad functional enough to extract the data, we had to perform one of the most delicate procedures in microsoldering: a complete CPU reball. Apple CPUs are incredibly fragile and heavily secured with underfill resin.

  • Underfill Removal: We carefully heated the board and meticulously scraped away the tough resin surrounding the CPU without scoring the PCB or knocking off microscopic capacitors.
  • CPU Extraction: Using perfectly calibrated heat, we safely floated the CPU off the motherboard without pulling any of the hundreds of fragile data pads.
  • Surface Prep: We cleaned the old solder and remaining underfill from both the motherboard and the delicate surface of the CPU, tinning the pads to ensure a perfect connection.
  • The Reball: Using a specialized stencil and solder paste, we created hundreds of perfectly uniform, shiny new solder balls on the CPU.
  • Reinstallation: We floated the newly reballed CPU back onto the motherboard, ensuring it snapped perfectly into alignment.

Result: Once connected to power and a test screen, the iPad successfully bypassed the failed update loop, booted fully to the passcode screen, and allowed us to rescue 100% of the customer’s data!

Watch The Full Repair Process

Watch an hour-long, uncut masterclass in microsoldering as we remove underfill, pull the CPU, reball it, and reinstall it to save the data.

“This device contained years of unbacked-up family photos and videos. Because the iPad was completely dead and stuck in a failed update state, cloud backups had failed to sync for months. By performing this highly complex CPU reball, we were able to bypass the damage and successfully extract 100% of the memories.”
