The Problem

This iPhone 14 Pro Max accidentally went through an entire cycle in the washing machine. Washing machine water damage is exceptionally destructive because the laundry detergent acts as a chemical accelerator, causing rapid corrosion to the copper traces and solder joints inside the phone. The device arrived at our lab completely dead and unresponsive to chargers.

Our Diagnostic Process

Initial multimeter testing revealed a direct short to ground on the primary battery power line (VBAT). Using a thermal camera and voltage injection, we located a shorted capacitor (C7825) and removed it. However, while this allowed the phone to boot, it presented a secondary fault: No Image.

By comparing diode mode readings of the LCD connector against a known-working donor board, we identified two lines with a diode mode reading that were supposed to be open lines, pointing to an issue deep inside the logic board. To fix it, we would have to separate the two halves of the iPhone’s “sandwich” motherboard.

The Repair & Recovery

  • Sandwich Board Split: Using a specialized bottom heater, we safely separated the top and bottom logic boards, revealing heavy corrosion trapped between the layers.
  • Display IC Replacement: We found extreme oxidation under the Display Power Management IC. We safely removed it, cleaned the delicate pads, and harvested a healthy replacement chip from a donor iPhone 13 Pro Max board.
  • Reballing & Joining: After installing the new IC, we reballed the entire interposer ring and joined the two halves of the motherboard back together perfectly.
  • 3-Minute Restart Fix: During testing, the phone began randomly restarting every 3 minutes. By using known-good tester parts, we bypassed a failed charge port flex and power button flex, stabilizing the device for data extraction.

Result:

With the short cleared, the Display IC replaced, and the sandwich board reballed, we secured a stable connection to our computer and successfully backed up 100% of the customer’s data via iTunes!

Watch The Full Repair Process

Watch an in-depth 49-minute breakdown as we trace the initial short circuit, split the sandwich board, replace the Display IC, and navigate the iPhone 3-minute restart panic log.

“Water damage from a washing machine is catastrophic. Many repair shops will clear the initial power short, but give up completely when the screen stays black because they lack the equipment to split the sandwich board. By tracing the missing diode values deep into the board and replacing the Display IC, we bypassed the secondary damage and saved the data.”
